A “Lei do Preço Único” postula que o mecanismo de concorrência fará com que, em situação de equilíbrio de mercado, duas unidades de bens semelhantes devam apresentar o mesmo preço. Particularmente no mercado de trabalho, dois indivíduos de mesma faixa etária, experiência, ocupação, anos de educação formal e de outras características que afetem sua produtividade, deveriam receber salários iguais. No entanto, nem sempre é isso o que se observa. As razões podem estar associadas tanto a particularidades dos trabalhadores, as vezes não claramente observáveis, quanto também a características dos empregadores.
