Abstract

The thinking over development encompasses a threefold exercise. First is the determination of a standard against which one can contrast facts and identify advancement, stagnation or regress. That is, the establishment of a meaning of development. The second aspect is the choice of the analytical tools with which the diagnostic will be carried out. The third deals with concrete problems that present opportunities for the application of the chosen theoretical framework. The two first aspects are strictly theoretical; only the third one is applied. The writings of Douglass North contain concepts that are useful to think over the theoretical aspects and offer an original perspective to think about applied problems.
