Generative AI and Remix: Difference and Repetition

Abstract

The article proposes an understanding of generative AI by analyzing its innovative difference in relation to the phenomenon of the remix and the important and even revolutionary changes in politics and power dynamics in remixing culture that can be summarized in the new term “spawning.” The reflection traces how generative AI extends and elaborates the deconstruction of representation that has been developed in the last several decades of research in remix studies.

Author Biography

  • David Günkel, Northern Illinois University

    David J. Gunkel is an award-winning author, educator and researcher, specializing in the philosophy of technology with a focus on the moral and legal challenges of artificial intelligence and robots. Dr. Gunkel is internationally recognized for his innovative work on the moral and legal status of artificial intelligence and robot rights, his efforts to diversify the theory and practice of AI ethics, and his agenda-setting contributions to the new field of human-machine communication (HMC). He currently holds the position of Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professor in the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University (USA) and associate professor of applied ethics at Łazarski University in Warsaw, Poland. His innovative curriculum design and teaching has been recognized with numerous awards, including NIU's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the prestigious Presidential Teaching Professorship
