Abstract

The cogito is an important element in Augustine’s philosophy. Therefore, it is opportune to carry out an analysis of some interpretations about it, writing what is called status quaestionis, that is, the state of the question. In this sense, the objective of this article is to weave an approach on the results achieved in the most relevant studies on this theme. Thus, firstly, it will be presented the concept that Étienne Gilson, Gareth B. Matthews, Brian Stock and Blake Dutton makes of the cogito and what is its function. In order that, in a second moment, to evaluate the considerations that such commentators made of the cogito. Bearing in mind that they did not write a work totally focused on this Augustinian philosophical element and that there are still other interpretations not presented here of Augustine’s cogito.
