A instituição escolar foi concebida, desde as suas origens, como tendo uma função essencial na construção do vínculo social (cf. Durkheim). Hoje somos confrontados com o difícil problema da manutenção da coesão social em sociedades em que convivem grupos de origem cultural diferente, onde as diferenças sociais são consideráveis e onde as trajectórias individuais são de uma infinita variedade. O acolhimento da diferença é um dos problemas maiores das sociedades modernas; daí a importância de estratégias educativas, tais como a educação intercultural, susceptíveis de favorecer esse respeito pelo outro e essa aceitação da diversidade. Nesta perspectiva, a instituição escolar tem, evidentemente, um papel essencial a desempenhar.
