Kim Kardashian’s outfit at the Met Gala 2021
from “strangeness” to otherness

The aim of this study was to understand how, by covering up and wearing an all-black outfit during her appearance at the Met Gala 2021, Kim Kardashian caused feelings which ranged from the effect of “strangeness” strongly manifested in social media to less repercussed value of otherness, unveiling the mechanisms involved. As theoretical-methodological input, the work relied on the contributions of Greimas, Landowski, Floch (1983) and Oliveira (2004, 2009, 2019) in order to examine one of the photographs taken of Kim Kardashian on her arrival at the Met Gala 2021, in which she is dressed in black from head to toe. The study revealed that while the feelings expressed by the chosen outfit segregated her in response to the expectations established for this kind of event, they also allowed Kim to manifest her otherness in a world contaminated by the Coronavirus.
