Governance of information technology in the Military Police of the Federal District: the perception of strategic manager officers

Abstract

In this work, the Governance of Information Technology (IT), the best practices and the perception of the strategic managers of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF) were analyzed. This is justified by: (i) the high investments made in the IT area, mainly by public agencies; (ii) the importance that IT Governance has in achieving efficiency and maximizing results; and (iii) the impacts that its incipient adoption may have on organizations, mainly related to the waste of public resources, the context in which the PMDF is inserted. The main objective of this work is to discuss the concept and importance of IT Governance for organizations, to study its adoption in the PMDF and to raise the perception of its strategic managers on the subject. In addition to a bibliographical review, a documentary research was carried out to identify the exercise of IT Governance in the PMDF and a field research with five senior officers in the role of Strategic Management. The findings indicate that there are, in the Corporation, formal instruments for the exercise of IT Governance, created as a result of the relevant legislation and by recommendation of the control agencies. The consulted officials point out problems related to the practice of IT Governance and suggest possible solutions applicable by the Institution itself.
