Sustainable information and the school library

Abstract

Purpose: This article aims to understand the relationship between sustainable information and school libraries, highlighting the im-portance of these institutions in the cultural and educational development of communities. Additionally, it proposes that school li-braries incorporate environmental education and sustainability topics into their practices. Methodology: The research is based on a literature review, analyzing studies on the role of school libraries in disseminating sustainable information and their contribution to sustainable development in Brazil. Results: The study reinforces that sustainable information is essential for the country's sustainable development, enabling a strategic position in the global scenario. The UN's 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight the importance of inclusive and equitable education, with an emphasis on SDG 4, which promotes lifelong learning opportunities. Practical/managerial implications: School libraries can serve as information and environmental awareness centers, integrating knowledge and action to prepare students for contemporary challenges. This requires the adoption of educational practices focused on sustainability and the responsible use of resources. Social implications: The research highlights how sustainable information can strengthen the social role of school libraries, promoting social justice and citizenship. By disseminating knowledge about sustainability, these institutions contribute to the formation of more conscious and engaged citizens regarding environmental and social issues.
