Internal communication and innovation: a systematic literature review

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to identify the importance and role of internal communication in fostering innovation, highlighting how resources and technologies contribute to this process. Methodology: This is a systematic literature review considering publications from the last ten years available in the SciELO and SPELL databases. The descriptors used were "internal communication" and "innovation," resulting in the selection of 13 relevant articles. Results: The scientific production on the relationship between internal communication and innovation remains scarce. Of the selected articles, 23% were published in 2023, indicating a growing interest in the topic. Internal communication stands out as an essential mechanism for building interpersonal relationships and improving employees' working conditions. In addition to traditional channels such as email, telephone, and meetings, the use of networked systems (intranet) and other technologies proves to be relevant in fostering innovation, while maintaining the importance of personal interaction. Practical/managerial implications: Companies should tailor their internal communication strategies to their organizational reality, promoting an efficient flow of information across departments and hierarchies. Investment in communication technologies can drive innovation, provided that it is balanced with maintaining interpersonal interactions. Social implications: Changes in internal communication methods can impact well-being, inclusion, and workplace equity, promoting greater engagement and transparency. Additionally, it fosters organizational innovation and influences the market by encouraging new forms of work and collaboration.
