A society of Emilies: moral formation in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's education proposal

Abstract

The subject of this research is the education system developed by the Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). The problem to be investigated is the following: how education in the individual context of the subject resolves the contradictions and moral challenges for the realization of a society whose composition of the political body will not be corrupted. The general objective is to investigate how Rousseau seeks to ensure the real possibility of implementing the entire structure of domestic education applied at a personal level –to the young Emilio –and guaranteeing its success in the social context. The result of this research is the demonstration that the ethical education system proposed by Rousseau establishes a real path to solving the moral corruption so deeply rooted in civil society. The works that support this research are: Discourse on the origin of inequality between men (1755), Emile or education (1757) and On the social contract (1757), written by the Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
