Abstract

This paper aims to relate Sophocles' Greek tragedy Antigone to Judith Butler's concepts of abjection and counter-normativity.  In Antigone, there is a disruption of gender accompanied by a displacement of kinship, with the constitution of multiple existential possibilities beyond a single supposedly normative family. In this way, Butler deconstructs the naturalization of kinship as given predominantly by the biological, operating a slippage in gender positions. The character Antigone enters public life as a way of affirming the political force of these multiple life potentialities.
