EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES IN PHYSICALLY ACTIVE INDIVIDUALS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

During physical exercise, the musculoskeletalsystem plays a fundamental role in the metabolic orchestration of other organs.
The balance between the pro and anti-inflammatory actions of the various cytokines helps for complete recovery of tissue after exercise.
A systematic review of the literature was carried out in order to assess the effects of physical exercise on inflammatory cyt okines in
physical activity practitioners. Five databases were searched to survey the articles: PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, MEDLINE and Web
of Science. Only controlled randomized controlled trials that showed the relationship between inflammatory markers (cytokines) and
exercise training were included. The samples ranged from 9 to 44 athletes or practitioners of any type of healthy physic al activity
submitted to physical training protocols. Thirteen articles were carried out in this study, carried out in several countries, involving
different sports. Despite the reduced number of samples in all studies analyzed, it was possible to highligh t that physical exercise
promotes an immediate increase in serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, with emphasis on IL-6 and TNF- , however some
anti-inflammatory mediators decrease after recovery, mainly IL-10. In addition, the intensity of physical exercise can alter the
inflammatory state.
