Abstract

The identification of motor deficits is essential for the development of strategies aimed at maintaining the elderly's motor
skills. Among the instruments directed the evaluation of these parameters, there is the Motor Scale for Older Adults (MSOA). This
review aimed to explore the bibliometric indicators of scientific production on MSOA, to investigate the methodological design of
these surveys and to characterize the General Motor Aptitude (GMA) of the investigated samples. Searches were performed in the
electronic databases Web of Science, CINAHL, Science Direct, Scielo, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Twenty-three
studies were eligible for this research. We found that studies with MSOA are concentrated in Brazilian national journals with
diversified focuses and scopes and the instrument has been used by different professionals, particularly in the health field. We also
observed that MSOA has a national reach, being Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul the states that concentrate the largest number
of works. Most scientific production had a cross-sectional design, used complete MSOA form and investigated groups of older adults
with different characteristics. From the studies integrated analysis we found that individuals with more older, diseases, disorders,
institutionalized or less physically active had lower GMA than younger, healthy and/or physically active older adults. We concluded
that the development of studies with MSOA is a multidisciplinary proposal that has applicability in different clinical and research
contexts. Furthermore, MSOA seems to be an assessment tool capable of distinguishing the older adults motor aptitude of groups with
different specificities. Accordingly, can represent a potential tool for several professionals and researchers who work with this
population.
