Abstract

This review refers to the book “Beyond our own strengths: origins and paths of sports science in Brazil between the 1930s and 1980s”, published by CRV in 2023. This book, carefully written by Prof. Dr. Quéfren Weld Cardozo Nogueira makes it possible to demarcate the need to (re)think the construction of sports sciences through different voices in the field and theoretical-methodological references of the Human and Social Sciences. It is understood how the process of historicity must be taken into consideration when analyzing sports sciences beyond their physical-organic aspects or statistical-biomedical parameters. Thus, the socio-historical construction of training points out how political, economic and sociocultural aspects influence the ways of achieving athletic performance, as well as the way of dealing with high-performance sport. In this sense, this book makes us think about how the area of Physical Education plays a fundamental role in the reflective training and rationality of intervention of new professionals who are also sensitive to other variables that escape the biological dimension. Reading this book, therefore, indicates how Sociology, History and Pedagogy of Sport can be incorporated, in an applied way, in the performance of sports professionals and, above all, undoubtedly, making a difference in the working lives of those who work in different institutions linked to this theme. In general terms, the work of Prof. Dr. Quéfren Weld Cardozo Nogueira highlights the importance of the continuous reflection of critically revisiting Physical Education, as well as opening new fronts or launching new perspectives/interpretations of scientific research and action regarding “training” in the area.
