Late-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: a Latin view

Abstract

Late-onset systemic lupus erythematosus is an uncommon condition, which may be under diagnosed and or underreported because of lower awareness about the hypothesis of this disease in older people. Recent epidemiological studies are commented and the data are compared with clinical features of lupus erythematosus in younger patients from Portugal and Brazil. Cardiovascular changes in elderly patients are highlighted. The aim is enhance the suspicion index about late-onset lupus in primary care setting.
