Abstract

Na década de 1930 vão emergir, em Portugal e Brasil, dois regimes ditatoriais cunhados com a mesma designação, Estado Novo, cujos líderes, Salazar e Getúlio Vargas, vão usar, sem escrúpulos nem limites, a força da repressão policial e da censura. Introduzem uma nova Constituição, órgãos de propaganda semelhantes e celebram um acordo bilateral como meio de fortalecimento dos dois regimes. Com base em literatura de referência, o artigo mostra as semelhanças entre os ditadores, que nunca se conheceram, e os seus processos de silenciamento da imprensa.

Author Biography

João Figueira, CEIS20-Universidade de Coimbra

João Figueira holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Coimbra, where he taught Journalism in the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities until February 2025, when he retired.
A researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies - CEIS20 University of Coimbra, he is also an associate researcher at the Observatory of Populism in the 21st Century and a researcher at the Observatory of Applied Research in Journalism in Brazil, a member of the Asociación de Historiadores de la Comunicación, as well as a trainer at the Literacy for the Media and Journalism Association.
Author of a vast bibliography published in Portugal, Brazil, Spain and the United Kingdom, his most recent book - Da incerteza como princípio: jornalismo, democracia, decadência da verdade (https://labcomca.ubi.pt/da-incerteza-como-principio-jornalismo-democracia-decadencia-da-verdade/ ) - published at the end of 2023, is the one in which he takes his reflections and analyses on contemporary information issues the furthest.

He has previously published and coordinated several other books, including the following titles: ‘Newspapers as political actors’; ‘Journalism in freedom’; ‘The essentials of the Portuguese press: 1974-2010’; ‘15 years later: the Portuguese press in Macau: 1999-2014’; ‘Fake news and the new (un)informative order in the post-truth era’; and ‘Political corruption as seen by journalists and politicians’.
‘History of Media and Journalism’; “Democracy, Populism and Journalism”; “Journalism and Literature”; and “Political Communication” are all areas of his study and research interests. He is currently analysing censorship and the processes of silencing the press in Brazil and Portugal during the 20th century, a topic that will be the subject of his next book.
Before dedicating himself exclusively to academic life in 2006, he was a journalist for more than two decades, most of which at Diário de Notícias, one of Portugal's most important and historic newspapers, where he was deputy editor for 14 years.
He has carried out journalistic work on five continents and has won several awards and honours, including the Press Reporting Prize awarded in 1999 by the Portuguese Press Club for his series of reports on post-traumatic stress disorder. In October 2024, the applied research team of which he is co-coordinator won the Adelmo Genro Filho Prize, the most prestigious academic journalism prize in Brazil.
