RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VERTICAL JUMP HEIGHT AND STUDENTS RUNNING PERFORMANCE

Assessing the height of the vertical jump and testing the relationship with the running performance of students can enable the
physical education teacher to measure the strength of the lower limbs and, at the same time, be an indicator of anaerobic capacity. Thus, the
aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the height of the vertical jump and performance in sprint and distance running by
students. Twenty-four students (14 females and 10 males), of both genders, with a mean age of 16.45 ± 1.16 years old, from a school in the
city of Nova Esperança do Sul participated. Data collections were carried out on the same day. Initially, an anthropometric assessment was
carried out prior to the application of the assessment protocols to characterize the sample. Afterwards, the individuals received instructions
from the evaluator on the test protocols, which were carried out in the following order with a minimum interval of 60 minutes for each
individual to recover: 1) sprint and long-distance runs; and, 2) vertical jump. From there, the following variables were obtained: body mass,
height, performance in sprint and long distance races and vertical jump height. Means and standard deviations of numerical variables were
calculated. For the correlations between the variables, the Pearson Product-Moment linear correlation test was used with a significance level
of 5%. Significant and positive correlations were found between vertical jump height and body mass, height, and long-distance running
performance (r = 0.450; r = 0.879; r = 0.606, respectively) and a significant negative correlation with running performance of speed (r = -
0.721). Therefore, it is recommended that these assessment parameters can be used by physical education teachers in their cla ssroom and
training practices aiming at improving physical performance in the athletics modality at school.
