This paper presents rankings of economic journals covering the period 1970-1995. The analysis of these rankings gives a number of results: The journals that appear consistently among the top 10 are: American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy and Econometrica. There is a tendency towards specialization in economics. Specialized journals are becoming more important in comparison with general journals. The relative importance of particular areas has changed from less to more technical fields. Journals published in the U.S. have gained market share from journals published elsewhere. The performance of journals shows that the influence of prestigious departments is decreasing, while the role of individual editors is increasing. Finally, there is growing participation of commercial publishers in the market of academic journals.Downloads
