Abstract

This article examines the trajectory that culminated on a consciousness shift in Euclides da Cunha - from a passionate War of Canudos supporter to its scathing critic - tracing its possible causes and circumstances, also discussing a hypothesis that the shattering of republican ideas may be one of the factors that have boosted the writing of Os Sertões. To do so, we have selected several articles, news reports, telegrams and letters from 1886 until 1897 during the early stages of the Republic.

É mestre e doutora em literatura pela Universidade de São Paulo (FFLCH-USP), onde pesquisou a obra de George Orwell e sua relação com a História. Atua como professora, oferecendo cursos sobre literatura, relações entre arte e sociedade, assim como metodologia de pesquisa. Autora de ensaios nessa área, entre eles o posfácio “A esperança vem do plural” da edição de 1984 publicado pela editora Antofágica.
