IS LOVING ENOUGH? Affects and gender in struggles for legitimacy and tradition in AmarElo – É tudo pra ontem

Abstract

This article analyses the relationships between affects, gender and struggles for legitimacy and tradition around the documentary AmarElo – it's all for yesterday, by the Brazilian rapper Emicida, released in 2020. Admittedly a self-legitimizing narrative, the documentary does dialogue with rap and samba, mpb, Black intellectuals and artists, social movements and historical processes in the country to dispute recognition and to propose the neo-samba as an articulation of other ways of living and feeling.. The analytical perspective that I adopt seeks to understand how love and the feminine create tension and expose the heterogeneous dynamics through which the documentary triggers gender identities, weaving affective alliances, in its discursive path of legitimation and narrative reconstruction in disputes over tradition.
