Abstract

The text discusses the history of biography and its relationship with the concept of identity. From Plutarch and his "Parallel Lives", passing through Paul Ricoeur's reflections (on sameness and ipseity) and Roland Barthes on biographemes. It concludes that the biographer no longer seeks to fill gaps at all costs, but is interested in the plurality of modes of appropriation, in the diversity of its reception and in the uses of the icon and in its fluctuations over time.
