Truth weakened in democratic confusion

Democracy is the realm of excess (Rancière, 2014), which makes it a territory permeable to all types of attacks, including lies, radical right-wing populism and disinformation (Southwell et al, 2018; Wardle & Derakshan, 2017, Figueira, 2023). Levels of trust in politicians and institutions, in turn, have been falling in most Western countries (Giddens, 2010), a trend that is seen as a consequence of the attacks and accusations made by the media.
