School Attacks as a Media Event: An Analysis of Journalist Coverage Of the Attack on The Blumenau Day Care Center on the Portal G1

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the reconfiguration of journalistic coverage of school attacks in Brazil from the journalistic event “The attack on the Blumenau daycare center”, based on the theoretical implications of the theory of the event (Alsina, 2009; Babo-Lança, 2011, 2013; Charaudeau, 2012; França, 2012; França & Almeida, 2008; França & Lopes, 2017; Quéré, 2005, 2011). To do so, we will use the analysis protocol of the journalistic coverage (Silva & Maia, 2011; Silva & Soares, 2013) to identify production marks of the journalistic coverage of the Attack on Blumenau daycare center on the G1 Portal. The objective is to understand the event as an agent of the journalistic practice in the reconfiguration of the field. The event in question causes a rupture in the way of doing journalism and editorial policies adopted in the coverage of school attacks, projecting new perspectives for posterity. From this point, there is a before (as crimes of this nature were reported in the media), a now (the event discontinuity, which refers to a new coverage proposal aimed at preventing and reducing damages), and an after (with regards to future coverage of school attacks).
