Crise humanitária e desinformação: A disputa simbólica da representação dos Yanomami

Abstract

The Yanomami, around 28,000 Indigenous people, face impacts from illegal mining and disinformation attacks, intensified during Bolsonaro's administration. This study analyzes false narratives from Bolsonaro supporters published on platforms, applying multimodal social semiotics (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006). We conclude that these narratives use images and data out-of-context to justify governmental neglect and delegitimize Indigenous demands, exacerbating their vulnerability.

Author Biographies

Maria Helena Martins da Costa Pires, Universidade do Minho

Helena Pires is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Minho. She earned her PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Minho in 2007. She is a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS - UMinho) and has published works on urban landscapes, semiotics, advertising, and contemporary art.

Carolina Toscano Maia, Universidade do Minho/Doutoranda em Ciências da Comunicação


Carolina Toscano Maia is a PhD in Communication Sciences at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, funded by a scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). She holds a Master's degree in Media Studies from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). She has an MBA in Administration and Marketing from the International Faculty of Curitiba (FACINTER/UNINTER) and a Bachelor's degree in Social Communication from the State University of Paraíba (UEPB). Currently, she is a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) at the University of Minho. Her research focuses on Communication, emphasizing Disinformation, Platformization, and Digital Culture.

Vinícius Lima Zuanazzi, Universidade do Minho/Doutorando em Ciências da Comunicação

Vinícius Zuanazzi is a PhD fellow funded by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) in Communication Sciences at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Minho (Portugal). He holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the School of Communication, Arts, and Design (FAMECOS) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). He also earned a Master’s degree in Social Communication from the same university's Graduate Program in Social Communication (PPGCOM/PUCRS). Currently, he is a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) at the University of Minho.
