The article analyzes three short stories by Machado de Assis, from the perspective of resistance narratives, as an important legacy for the memory of slavery and for the understanding of contemporary problems. It evaluates strategies used by the author so that his criticisms could be recovered in a subsequent historical time. In this bias, it discusses the situation of black women who, free or not, suffered from a process of inferiority and self-inferiorization promoted by the logic of slavery.
