Abstract

The impact of motivation on quality of life among wheelchair basketball athletes was investigated. Eighty-one athletes answered the Sport Motivation Scale and the SF-36, and 20 were interviewed. Statistical analysis was conducted through Structural Equation Modeling, content analysis and network analysis. The results showed that intrinsic motivation explains physical health with greater intensity than mental health. Parental support, benefits (psychological, physical and social) and the pursuit of health lead to sports practice according to athletes’ reports. The sport environment is favorable for self-determination development and, consequently, athletes’ health.
